This case study details the implementation of IV compounding automation at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) in Rochester, New York. The medical center faced challenges related to supply chain disruptions and safety issues in their internal IV compounding processes, which led them to consider insourcing. To address these challenges, URMC adopted a range of Omnicell IV compounding solutions, including non-hazardous and hazardous IV compounding robots, as well as IV workflow automation. The solutions aimed to enhance patient safety and reduce medication costs by enabling the production of standardized doses on-site. The impact of these technologies has been significant, with URMC processing over 455,000 error-free doses, achieving 100% ingredient scanning, and reducing contamination risks. The automation strategy also focused on safety elements such as barcode verification and gravimetric checks, with a goal of ensuring all hazardous doses are prepared using the safest compounding processes available.
