Temple University Hospital Specialty Pharmacy Case Study

This case study details the specialty pharmacy initiative undertaken by Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The hospital faced significant challenges, including a complex patient mix with a high percentage of Medicaid patients and delays in specialty medication dispensing. To address these issues, Temple decided to bring its specialty pharmacy services in-house, aiming to enhance patient care and reduce costs associated with contract pharmacies. The hospital partnered with Omnicell Specialty Pharmacy Services to leverage their expertise while maintaining control over the project. As a result, Temple experienced a substantial increase in providers served and patient volume, alongside significant growth in daily specialty pharmacy sales. The initiative also improved access to Limited Distribution Drugs (LDDs) and facilitated necessary accreditations. Moving forward, the hospital plans to implement additional improvements to its 340B access and launch an in-house home infusion program to further enhance service delivery.
