Virtual Buffer Management for R&D Project Efficiency

This paper presents a technical report on Virtual Buffer Management (VBM), a project management approach designed to enhance visibility and reduce planning adjustments in research and development (R&D) projects characterized by high variability and uncertainty. The report discusses the limitations of Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM) when applied to R&D projects, particularly the challenges in managing buffer fluctuations and the extensive efforts required for plan modifications. VBM offers a solution by calculating project buffers based on all tasks rather than just those in the critical chain, thereby improving project status visualization.
