This case study outlines the implementation of OnPage's alert management system to improve clinical communication for a research study focused on pediatric obesity led by Dr. Kristi Adamo at the University of Ottawa. The study, known as PLACENTA, aims to identify early markers of obesity during pregnancy and childhood. The initial reliance on pagers for alerting researchers when study participants went into labor resulted in missed notifications and significant financial losses due to the inability to collect placentas in a timely manner. By adopting OnPage, the research team established a more efficient workflow, allowing immediate alerts to researchers' smartphones upon labor onset. This transition ensured that no alerts or placentas were missed, thereby safeguarding the study's objectives. The OnPage system also provided digital on-call scheduling, which streamlined the notification process and improved response times, ultimately enhancing the team's operational effectiveness in critical situations.
