This document is a case study detailing the automation of palletizing and packaging processes for a global Contract Manufacturing Organization (CMO) specializing in pharmaceutical manufacturing. The project was initiated to address challenges associated with manual end-of-line operations, which included high labor dependency, increased human errors, and ergonomic risks. The client aimed to modernize its packaging line to improve productivity and comply with strict GMP and traceability requirements. The implementation involved a phased approach with three key phases: the installation of a collaborative palletizing robot, integration of an automatic case packer, and ongoing automation of case erecting. The results showed a significant reduction in staffing needs, improved overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), and a full return on investment achieved within 24 months. The automation not only enhanced operational efficiency but also positioned the client as a competitive player in the pharmaceutical copacking industry.
