Pathogen Detection and AMR Monitoring in Wastewater

This document is a technical report that presents an integrated approach for pathogen detection, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) monitoring, and functional analysis in wastewater systems. The study highlights the use of Zymo Research's Quick-DNA/RNA™ Water Kit and PacBio Onso™ short-read sequencing technology to enhance the understanding of microbial dynamics in wastewater environments. The report details the methodology employed, including the challenges associated with nucleic acid extraction from wastewater samples and the importance of processing large volumes for effective pathogen detection. It outlines the capabilities of both the Illumina NextSeq 2000™ and PacBio Onso™ systems in analyzing microbial communities and AMR profiles. Results from the study indicate the effectiveness of the Quick-DNA/RNA™ Water Kit in conjunction with next-generation sequencing for wastewater surveillance, offering insights into microbial taxa and antibiotic resistance genes.
