This technical report discusses the evaluation of filter debris as a diagnostic tool for monitoring the condition of fluid systems, particularly in aerospace applications. It outlines the use of advanced techniques such as scanning electron microscope coupled with X-ray emission spectroscopy (SEM/EDX) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy to analyze the chemical composition of engine lube filter debris. The report presents a diagnostic filter system that includes a specialized filter element with a pull-out diagnostic layer, known as the Dirt Alert® diagnostic layer, and a custom-designed contaminant analyzer. The analysis process allows for on-site evaluation of debris captured on the diagnostic layer. Results from laboratory evaluations of the contaminant analyzer prototype with various filter elements are included, demonstrating the system's viability for fluid condition monitoring. The report also details the calibration considerations for accurate debris analysis and discusses the implications of debris evaluation for detecting abnormal wear and potential failures in hydraulic systems.
