This technical report outlines the methodology developed by the U.S. Army in collaboration with industry for the reutilization of used hydraulic oil. The process is divided into three phases: a laboratory investigation to assess the restoration of used hydraulic fluid to military specifications, a field investigation to identify commercial equipment for processing the fluid, and the establishment of Cooperative Research & Development Agreements (CRADAs) with manufacturers of hydraulic oil recyclers. The report details how contaminants can be removed from used hydraulic fluid, restoring its performance capabilities. It also discusses the benefits of this approach, including reduced disposal and procurement costs, increased operational readiness, and environmental conservation. The findings indicate that the automated process of restoring used hydraulic fluid can be effectively implemented, contributing to significant cost savings for military services while meeting pollution prevention goals. The report concludes with recommendations for the implementation of hydraulic oil recycling programs.
