This case study outlines the challenges and solutions associated with the tramway extension in the historic center of Florence, Italy. The project, initiated in 2015 and completed in phases by 2025, involved extending the tramway by 7.8 km to connect Peretola Airport to Piazza San Maro. Given the proximity to UNESCO heritage sites and historical buildings, significant concerns arose regarding noise and vibration impacts on these structures. To address these issues, Pandrol implemented a combination of Floating Slab Mats and QTrack® systems to effectively reduce vibrations and noise levels. The Floating Slab Mat, made from 90% recycled rubber, provided a maintenance-free solution that was compatible with various rail systems. The QTrack® system offered vertical and lateral support while minimizing vibration transmission. The collaboration between Pandrol and Alstom ensured efficient installation and adherence to environmental goals, contributing to a quieter and more stable rail system that protects Florence's architectural heritage.
