This document is a case study that outlines the challenges faced by an investor transitioning from an underperforming active management strategy to a more tax-efficient investment approach. The advisor identified that the client was dissatisfied with the performance of their separately managed account (SMA) due to the active manager's lackluster returns. However, concerns about realizing significant capital gains during the transition posed a major hurdle. To address this, Parametric developed a proprietary transition analysis that examined various scenarios balancing capital gains realization against tracking error relative to a desired benchmark. The client ultimately chose a moderate tracking error scenario, allowing for some taxable gains while achieving a more diversified portfolio. The results demonstrated that the client now holds a tax-efficient portfolio with reduced risk compared to the target index, illustrating the effectiveness of Parametric's approach to managing transitions in investment strategies.
