This research article examines the relationship between workforce skills and the effective use of artificial intelligence (AI) and algorithms within organizations. It presents evidence that the value generated from AI is enhanced when algorithmic expertise is decentralized among employees with domain knowledge, contrasting with traditional models where technical skills are centralized within IT specialists. The study analyzes two workforce data sets to show that employers increasingly seek algorithmic expertise in non-technical roles, indicating a shift in job requirements. It also discusses the proliferation of no-code tools that democratize access to AI capabilities, facilitating the acquisition of these skills by domain experts. The findings suggest that firms are valued higher in financial markets when they employ individuals who can integrate domain expertise with algorithmic skills. This research contributes to understanding how organizations can adapt their hiring practices and job designs to leverage AI technologies effectively, highlighting the importance of distributing technical skills across various roles.
