This case study details the migration of 2,800 virtual machines (VMs) from VMware to Platform9 Private Cloud Director (PCD) by a global telecommunications enterprise. The organization sought a cost-effective and enterprise-grade alternative to VMware due to rising costs and vendor lock-in risks. The migration, which spans multiple global locations, is being executed in phases over six months to ensure minimal disruption. A rigorous Proof of Concept (PoC) validated PCD's capabilities, including automation, high availability, and seamless integration with existing infrastructure. The study outlines the scale of the infrastructure, which includes 500 VMware hypervisor hosts and four globally distributed data centers. It also describes the migration capabilities, emphasizing the use of the vJailbreak tool for complex workloads. The conclusion highlights the strategic decision to transition fully to PCD, aiming for reduced costs and modernized infrastructure without sacrificing performance or features.
