This case study details the implementation of the Operational Data Cache at Citizens Bank, aimed at enhancing their digital banking capabilities by integrating mainframe data with cloud applications. Citizens Bank, a prominent financial institution, faced challenges in efficiently managing large volumes of data stored on their mainframe systems, particularly as they transitioned to cloud-based solutions supported by AWS. The study outlines the technical difficulties encountered, including network stability issues and high operational costs due to inefficient data transfer processes. To address these challenges, the internal team developed the Operational Data Cache concept, which allows for seamless extraction of mainframe data to the cloud without altering legacy applications. The implementation of this solution has resulted in significant improvements in response times, data reliability, and operational efficiency. Key outcomes include a six percent overall cost reduction, enhanced customer experience through faster data access, and increased user adoption of digital channels. The case study concludes with plans for further expansion of the data cache program to optimize mainframe operations.
