This technical report evaluates the use of the VMware Architecture Migration Tool (VAMT) for cross-architecture migrations of virtual machines (VMs) to Dell PowerEdge R7725 servers powered by 5th Gen AMD EPYC processors. The report outlines three migration scenarios: single VM migrations, batch migrations, and scheduled migrations, all initiated from a five-year-old Intel Xeon processor-based system. It details the successful execution of these migrations, which were completed in less than 10 minutes for single VMs and under 15 minutes for batch migrations. The report emphasizes the importance of maintaining operational continuity and workload integrity during these migrations, supported by post-migration integrity checks that confirmed data consistency. Additionally, it discusses the potential for reduced total cost of ownership and improved performance metrics, including increased VM density and energy efficiency. The findings suggest that VAMT provides a controlled and repeatable migration process that minimizes operational risks while advancing infrastructure modernization goals.
