This case study outlines the implementation of the Supports Intensity Scale® Needs Assessments (SIS-A) program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in Vermont. Prior to 2021, the state lacked a standardized assessment approach, leading to inconsistencies in measuring individual needs. To address this challenge, the Vermont Department of Disabilities, Aging, and Independent Living (DAIL) partnered with Public Consulting Group (PCG) to establish a systematic assessment program. The project involved recruiting and training staff in accordance with American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD) requirements. Key components included forming an expert leadership team, developing an operational staffing plan, and ensuring effective stakeholder engagement. The assessment process was detailed, encompassing steps from intake to completion, with a focus on clear communication with stakeholders. Since the program's inception, PCG has conducted over 2,000 assessments, facilitating a transition to the SIS-A 2nd Edition and enhancing community relationships through education about the assessment process.
