This case study outlines the migration of a large Oracle user’s on-premise database workload to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) by Pythian. The document details the challenges faced during the migration process, particularly the limited support provided by the cloud vendor, which necessitated the involvement of a managed service provider (MSP) like Pythian. The case study describes how Pythian upgraded the customer's Oracle Database from version 11g to 12cR2 and subsequently migrated it to OCI Exadata Cloud Service (ExaCS). It also highlights the ongoing managed services provided by Pythian, which include database management, SQL performance tuning, and application compatibility support. The results of this migration are presented, showing a stabilized workload, minimized downtime, and enhanced control over patching and upgrades for the customer. The case study emphasizes the importance of expert support in managing complex database environments in the cloud.
