This case study outlines the partnership between Western Academic Medical Center (AMC) and Qventus aimed at addressing inefficiencies in patient flow, particularly in discharge planning. The AMC faced challenges due to a lack of standardized discharge processes across its hospitals, which resulted in avoidable discharge delays and increased length of stay (LOS). The goals of the partnership included reducing excess days to enhance inpatient capacity, predicting and addressing discharge delays in real-time, and alleviating the burden on care teams. The implementation of Qventus’ Inpatient Capacity Solution automated discharge planning and prioritized actions to remove barriers to discharge. Key results included over $7.9 million in savings, a 24% increase in discharge volume, and a 15% reduction in mean excess days. The solution utilized machine learning to optimize discharge dates and care plans, ultimately improving patient throughput and operational efficiency within the AMC.
