This white paper examines the significant mental health challenges faced by individuals in the rare disease community, highlighting the direct impact on treatment adherence, clinical trial outcomes, and overall patient well-being. Research conducted with 958 patients and caregivers reveals that 82.4% experience frequent emotional distress, with anxiety and medical uncertainty being prevalent issues. The findings indicate that mental health is often overlooked in rare disease care, despite its critical role in treatment success. The paper outlines the emotional burden shared by patients and caregivers, emphasizing the need for improved access to mental health services tailored to the unique challenges of rare diseases. It also identifies a substantial gap between the need for professional mental health support and the actual services accessed, with only 30% of respondents utilizing such resources. Recommendations for healthcare providers and stakeholders focus on fostering understanding, empathy, and integrated care to better support the mental health needs of this community.
