This technical report presents an analysis of the CopyCop influence network, identified by Insikt Group in March 2024, which utilizes large language models (LLMs) to disseminate politically biased content through inauthentic media outlets. The network is believed to be operated from Russia and aligned with the Russian government, targeting audiences in the US, UK, and France. It employs generative AI to plagiarize and modify content from mainstream media, creating narratives that undermine Western political positions and support Russian influence objectives. The report outlines the network's operational tactics, including the use of prompt engineering to tailor content and the amplification of its messages by known Russian state-sponsored actors. It also highlights the risks posed by AI-generated disinformation to legitimate media outlets and public officials, emphasizing the need for awareness and proactive measures against such malign influence operations. The findings underscore the challenges faced by election defenders in countering these narratives, particularly during critical political periods.
