This document is a research article that investigates the effectiveness of behaviourally informed messaging in increasing retirement savings through tax incentives. Conducted as a nationwide randomized controlled trial in Estonia, the study involved 127,974 eligible pension account holders who received various email reminders about tax benefits related to their retirement contributions. The results indicated that these reminders significantly increased the likelihood of making contributions by 10.49% and raised average contributions by 14.75% within a week of the tax deadline. The study also explored the impact of different messaging strategies, revealing that certain messages, particularly those emphasizing family security, had a notable effect on higher-income individuals. The findings suggest that simple, low-cost behavioural reminders can effectively amplify tax incentives, providing valuable insights for policymakers aiming to enhance retirement savings among individuals. The article emphasizes the importance of understanding psychological barriers to saving and the potential for tailored messaging to improve financial decision-making.
