This study examines the role of data management in unlocking value during the Generative AI era. It highlights the challenges enterprises face as they increase their investments in AI technologies, particularly in multimodal capabilities and human-like reasoning. The study draws on a survey of 150 data and AI executives, revealing a gap between ambition and execution in integrating Generative AI into business operations. It identifies data curation and management as critical factors for success, emphasizing the need for strategies to harness unstructured data. The paper contrasts data management practices before and after the advent of Generative AI, pointing out significant challenges in data accessibility and quality. It concludes by outlining four essential pillars of data-centric AI that provide a roadmap for enterprises to effectively implement AI systems, ensuring they can leverage their data assets for competitive advantage. The findings underscore the importance of a robust data strategy in transforming AI from a theoretical concept into practical applications.
