This case study examines the Fort Zumwalt School District's adoption of propane school buses over a thirteen-year period. The district, located in O’Fallon, Missouri, initiated this transition in 2011 to reduce emissions and transportation costs. Initially, the district purchased eight Blue Bird Vision Propane buses, and has since expanded its fleet to 64 propane buses, achieving significant savings in fuel costs, estimated at 56% annually. The study outlines the challenges faced during the transition, including the need for proper fueling infrastructure, which the district addressed by installing two on-site propane autogas stations. The propane buses not only provide financial benefits but also contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing harmful emissions. The case study further discusses the operational advantages of propane buses, such as lower maintenance costs and improved driver experience. The district continues to replace aging diesel buses with propane models, reflecting a commitment to cleaner transportation solutions.
