This case study presents the optimization of the solid waste hauling process for the world's largest retailer, managed by Rubicon Technologies. The objective was to minimize costs and enhance sustainability performance across more than 4,500 locations. An audit revealed that the retailer was over-serviced by its previous provider, with rigid schedules for open-top container pickups regardless of fullness. The solution involved transitioning to on-site compactors, allowing for efficient waste sorting and limiting service frequency to when the compactor was full. This change resulted in a significant reduction in emissions due to decreased service frequency, thereby lowering the carbon footprint of waste transportation. Additionally, the optimization led to direct cost savings by reducing labor, fuel, and vehicle maintenance expenses, ultimately improving operational efficiency and profitability for the retailer. The case study highlights the benefits of adopting a more sustainable waste management approach.
