This technical report examines the applications of connected, digitalized Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) within the context of Industrie 4.0. It organizes the analysis using a framework that distinguishes three process layers: workpiece, assembly, and product. Each layer is characterized by unique timeframes and stakeholder interactions, which necessitate specific data infrastructure and emphasize the importance of data security and privacy. The report identifies critical gaps in real-world applications of WAAM, proposing a data-driven quality control approach aimed at enhancing process and product quality. This method leverages digital shadows to create effective interfaces within production networks and highlights the potential for significant reductions in welding fume emissions and energy consumption. The distinct challenges encountered at each process layer are discussed, as well as the necessary technical approaches to ensure effective communication and data safety among various stakeholders involved in the additive manufacturing process.
