This case study details Alabama Power's strategic implementation of the TripSaver II reclosers to modernize its grid and improve reliability. The utility, which serves a storm-prone region, faced challenges with frequent outages caused by temporary faults. To address these issues, Alabama Power expanded the use of TripSaver II reclosers, which prevent temporary faults from becoming sustained outages. The deployment of 20 reclosers in the Birmingham area led to significant operational improvements, including a reduction of 106,947 customer minutes of interruption and $15,570 in avoided truck roll costs. Following the success of the pilot, Alabama Power initiated a broader rollout, planning to install 1,500 reclosers annually over the next decade. The results indicated a 70% improvement in the System Average Interruption Frequency Index (SAIFI) and a 57% improvement in the System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI), showcasing the effectiveness of the TripSaver II reclosers in enhancing grid reliability and customer satisfaction.
