This case study details the grid modernization efforts of the Habersham Electric Membership Corporation (HEMC) in Georgia, aimed at enhancing system reliability and reducing customer downtime. The utility faced challenges due to its distribution system being located in heavily forested and mountainous areas, which led to frequent outages. In response, HEMC launched a modernization plan that focused on improving reliability, reducing maintenance, integrating smart grid technology, and enhancing fault detection. Collaborating with S&C Electric Company, HEMC implemented advanced technologies such as IntelliRupter fault interrupters and TripSaver II reclosers. These solutions enabled HEMC to automate and improve its feeder and lateral lines, resulting in significant reductions in outage duration and minutes without power. The case study also highlights the recognition HEMC received for customer satisfaction improvements following the implementation of these technologies, demonstrating the positive impact of the grid upgrades on service delivery for its members.
