This case study details the deployment of S&C’s TripSaver II Cutout-Mounted Reclosers by COPEL, a major utility in Brazil, to enhance system reliability and comply with national regulatory standards set by ANEEL. COPEL faced challenges in meeting the stringent System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) and System Average Interruption Frequency Index (SAIFI) requirements imposed by ANEEL, particularly in rural areas with poor reliability. The utility conducted pilot projects to evaluate various single-phase reclosers, ultimately selecting the TripSaver II for its advanced fault detection and automatic power restoration capabilities. The initial deployment of 1,750 units resulted in a significant 68.1% reduction in SAIDI, effectively decreasing outage duration and allowing COPEL to avoid unnecessary operational costs. Following successful results, COPEL expanded its order to 17,400 additional units, highlighting the effectiveness of the TripSaver II in improving reliability across its distribution network. The case study emphasizes the importance of effective solutions in meeting regulatory requirements and enhancing service quality.
