This technical report details the pilot program conducted by National Grid, which involved the trial of 27 TripSaver II reclosers over a period of 19 months. The primary objective of the pilot was to assess the effectiveness of these devices in mitigating outages caused by temporary faults along the utility's distribution network. The report outlines the significant outcomes of the pilot, including the clearing of 25 temporary faults, resulting in substantial operational savings of £300,000 (approximately US$380,000) from regulatory incentives and reduced operation and maintenance costs. Additionally, the implementation of the reclosers led to the avoidance of approximately 205 kilograms (450 pounds) of carbon emissions by eliminating unnecessary truck rolls. The findings indicate that the TripSaver II reclosers achieved a payback period of less than six months, demonstrating their potential for improving reliability metrics and customer satisfaction. National Grid plans to expand the deployment of these devices based on the positive results observed during the pilot.
