This case study details the implementation of TripSaver II reclosers by the Palau Public Utilities Corporation (PPUC) to enhance grid reliability and support the transition to renewable energy. The utility, which serves approximately 7,000 customers, faced significant challenges due to frequent outages caused by severe weather and vegetation growth. To address these issues, PPUC installed 62 TripSaver II reclosers, which successfully cleared 428 temporary faults over three years, preventing these faults from becoming permanent outages. The initiative resulted in a reduction of carbon emissions by approximately 2.5 tons and generated financial savings of around US $214,000 with a payback period of 1.5 years. The case study outlines the challenges faced by PPUC, the selection process for the reclosers, and the training provided for their deployment. It emphasizes the importance of reliability improvements in achieving the utility's goals of transitioning from diesel generation to renewable energy sources.
