Impact of Advanced AI Systems on Democracy

This research article discusses the potential impacts of advanced AI systems, particularly generative artificial intelligence, on democratic processes. It outlines three main classes of impacts: epistemic, material, and foundational. The epistemic impacts focus on how AI may influence citizens' ability to make informed political choices, with concerns about misinformation and the potential for AI to enhance the quality of information available to voters. The material impacts address the risks of AI being misused to disrupt electoral processes, while also highlighting its potential to improve governance and citizen engagement. Lastly, the foundational impacts consider how AI could either undermine or support the core principles of democracy, such as accountability and inclusivity. The article emphasizes that while there are significant challenges posed by AI, there are also opportunities for enhancing democratic participation and discourse.
