This technical report evaluates the accuracy of real-time dust monitors used in quarry settings, specifically focusing on three devices: the SidePak™ AM520, Trolex XD1+, and Nanozen DustCount 9000. The study compares their performance against conventional gravimetric methods in both field and laboratory environments. The research highlights that while real-time monitors are increasingly adopted for their rapid detection capabilities, their accuracy remains a concern. The findings indicate that the SidePak™ and Nanozen monitors exhibited inconsistent accuracy, with significant variations based on the specific tasks performed. In contrast, the Trolex XD1+ consistently underestimated respirable dust levels. The study emphasizes the necessity for site-specific calibration to enhance the reliability of these monitors and suggests further research with larger datasets to refine correction factors. Overall, the report underscores the importance of accurate dust monitoring in preventing health risks associated with respirable crystalline silica exposure in quarrying activities.
