This case study details the Poultry Welfare Research Project, implemented by Locatify in collaboration with researchers from Queen’s University Belfast. The project utilized Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology to enhance animal welfare and behavioral monitoring in commercial poultry farming. The primary objective was to develop a high-precision monitoring system capable of tracking individual chickens in real time. Key goals included improving poultry welfare through understanding movement patterns, detecting health issues based on behavioral insights, automating data collection, and reducing human intervention to minimize stress on the animals. The implementation faced challenges such as ensuring accurate tracking in a dynamic environment and managing large data volumes. The solution involved installing UWB anchors and equipping chickens with lightweight tags for movement tracking. The results indicated significant improvements in monitoring accuracy, reduced manual labor, and enhanced efficiency in poultry behavior research. The project demonstrates the potential of UWB technology in advancing animal welfare studies.
