Evaluation of Microbial Identification Performance

This document is a technical report that evaluates the performance of MicrobialTrack, a MALDI-TOF MS-based microbial identification software, in conjunction with the MALDI-8030 EasyCare system. The report outlines the methodology used for microbial identification, which includes a proteomics-based approach that utilizes a theoretical mass spectral database derived from over 80,000 taxonomically classified microorganisms. The study involved the analysis of 50 bacterial strains, with results indicating that high identification confidence was achieved for 47 out of the 50 strains using the direct smear method. Additionally, the report discusses the impact of different sample preparation methods on identification confidence, noting improvements when alternative methods were employed. The findings highlight the challenges of distinguishing closely related species, particularly within the Bacillus genus, where high genomic similarity complicates identification.
