This case study outlines the modernization of a business intelligence and analytics platform utilized by school districts in the United States. The objective was to consolidate data from over 50 separate district systems into a single governed source of truth, facilitating dynamic querying and near-real-time reporting. The existing legacy SQL architecture was unable to process data efficiently, leading to slow and static reporting. The solution involved designing a cloud data warehouse on Amazon Redshift, which replaced the outdated SQL processing layer. This new architecture allowed for independent syncing jobs for each source system, ensuring that data could be ingested and refreshed without disruptions. Additionally, self-service analytics were implemented, enabling users to create their own reports and receive automated alerts on critical metrics. The outcome was a robust platform now used daily by over 2,000 schools, providing a unified view of student and operational data while enhancing reporting capabilities and operational efficiency.
