This document is a research article presenting MILESTONES, a semi-automated self-monitoring tool designed to enhance self-directed learning among online learners. The tool addresses challenges faced by individuals learning computational skills independently, particularly in tracking progress and fostering reflection. MILESTONES organizes learning sessions and web resources through three visual overviews: Time Pulse, Cue-Connect, and Sortify. A field deployment study involving 17 participants revealed that learners found the tool intuitive and effective, even without prior self-monitoring experience. The visual overviews encouraged learners to pause and reflect on their learning habits, aligning them with their goals. The study also explored the use of a companion journal, which, while inconsistently used, aided learners in forming and reflecting on their objectives. The findings contribute to the design of learner-centered tools that cater to diverse learning needs and highlight the importance of self-monitoring in online education.
