This case study details the efforts of a utility company in Canada to optimize its application portfolio and implement an enterprise architecture (EA) practice. The company sought to gain insights into its IT environment, aiming for cost savings and improved understanding of its application usage. The utility engaged SoftwareOne to assist in achieving these goals through a two-phased approach. The first phase involved inventorying all applications, building a business capability model, and analyzing application usage to identify redundancies. The second phase focused on strategic discussions regarding application capabilities and optimization. As a result of these efforts, the utility was able to save USD 2 million in software licensing and maintenance costs, reduce its application count by 17%, and gain enhanced visibility into its IT landscape. The implementation of ServiceNow APM tools further supported the maintenance of best practices in application management, enabling the utility to drive better data-driven business decisions.
