This case study details the implementation of Solution-Soft's GDZIP compression technology by a major European semiconductor manufacturer. The client faced challenges with their existing IC design infrastructure, particularly concerning the storage requirements and transfer times associated with large GDSII design files. The study outlines the evaluation process where GDZIP was tested against a traditional gzip compression solution. Results indicated that GDZIP achieved an average compression rate three times smaller than gzip, while also performing 1.5 times faster. The transition to GDZIP involved straightforward modifications to existing process management scripts, completed in under four man-hours. The successful standardization on GDZIP has led to significant improvements in file access times, data backup and recovery times, and reduced LAN bandwidth usage. The Tapeout Engineer noted the advantages of GDZIP in enhancing the efficiency of file transfers with partners, contributing to a more reliable design process.
