This case study outlines the implementation of Spectra Logic's TFinity ExaScale Tape Libraries at AWE, an organization that supports the UK’s nuclear defense strategy. High performance computing is essential for AWE’s science-based programs, and the new tape libraries provide enhanced storage capacity and indefinite data retention. AWE operates some of the world’s largest supercomputers, relying on computational methods to ensure stockpile safety under the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. The case study details the challenges AWE faced with Oracle's downsizing of its SL8500 tape portfolio, prompting the need for scalable replacements compatible with T10K drives and LTO-9 technology. The deployment of two TFinity libraries with LTO-8 drives included a disaster recovery plan ensuring full data redundancy and compatibility with existing software. The TFinity libraries also feature Spectra Swarm for seamless integration with modern data center infrastructure and a pre-purchase program for future LTO upgrades, highlighting AWE's commitment to maintaining its critical data infrastructure.
