This case study details the implementation of the Spotfire visual data science platform at Occidental Petroleum (Oxy), one of the largest oil and gas producers in the U.S. The objective was to address the challenges faced by upstream energy teams in processing and standardizing vast amounts of well data. Oxy's internal data science team developed two key applications: the Production Outlook Tool (POT) and the Comparator Surveillance Tool (CST). POT standardizes monthly production forecasting across over 5,000 wells, while CST supports performance benchmarking across tens of thousands of wells. The integration of various technologies, including Databricks and SQL, has enabled significant improvements in efficiency and transparency. The case study outlines how Spotfire has streamlined collaboration, reduced load times from 15 minutes to under nine seconds, and enhanced decision-making capabilities for over 500 users. The ongoing evolution of these tools reflects Oxy's commitment to leveraging technology for better operational performance.
