This case study details the installation of dual temperature refrigeration systems by Star Refrigeration at Bidfood's temperature-controlled storage distribution center in Glasgow. The systems, operational since November 2022, utilize carbon dioxide (CO2) as a natural refrigerant, which is sustainable and compliant with environmental regulations. The refrigeration setup includes a freezer operating at -25 °C and chill areas at +2 °C, designed for optimal energy efficiency. The installation features advanced components such as EC fans and a heat recovery system that repurposes waste heat. The Specific Energy Consumption (SEC) value for the facility was calculated to be 10.3 kWh/m3/yr, significantly lower than the UK 'Best Practice' benchmark of 20.4 kWh/m3/yr, indicating substantial energy savings and a reduction in CO2 emissions. The maintenance and compliance aspects are also addressed, ensuring adherence to safety regulations and ongoing operational efficiency. This collaboration supports Bidfood's sustainability goals and commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.
