This research article investigates the trade-off between building up play from the back and intentionally kicking the ball out of bounds to gain a throw-in in the opponent's defensive third. The study outlines how modern soccer has evolved from the traditional approach of clearing the ball to a more strategic build-up play. It presents an empirical evaluation using basic statistical analysis and machine learning to assess the effectiveness of these two strategies. The analysis indicates that, in certain situations, opting for a throw-in may provide a higher probability of scoring compared to a backward pass. The research utilizes extensive datasets from various soccer leagues to validate the findings, focusing on the conditions under which each strategy is applied. The results suggest that kicking the ball out of play can be a viable alternative to maintaining possession, particularly when facing pressure from opponents. This work contributes to the understanding of tactical decision-making in soccer.
