This case study outlines the implementation of a 3D printed modular paint fixture by Omega Tool Corp, a leader in injection mold manufacturing. The objective was to enhance paint line efficiency and minimize tooling inventory by utilizing a fixture adaptable to various parts and assemblies. The design requirements included the ability to hold a 30-pound part and withstand high temperatures. Instead of traditional all-metal fixtures, Omega adopted 3D printed components made from ULTEM™ 9085 resin, which are compatible with the painting environment due to their high-temperature resistance and chemical durability. The Stratasys F3300 production system was employed to print these components, which allowed for significant improvements in fixture adjustability and weight reduction. The results demonstrated that the modular fixture could support the required weight without deformation, enabling fast and repeatable adjustments while reducing overall fixture inventory. This innovative approach not only met the design objectives but also facilitated faster production processes across various departments.
