This case study details the reactivation of the Trans-Andean Pipeline, a 425 km crude oil pipeline connecting Argentina and Chile. Originally commissioned in 1994, the pipeline was suspended in 2006 and remained inactive for over 15 years due to extensive corrosion and contamination. The reactivation was driven by rising production from Argentina's Vaca Muerta shale fields and Chile's need for a reliable crude supply. The project faced significant technical challenges, including the degradation of all 15 pumps and the complexities of operating in a remote, high-altitude environment. Sulzer implemented a structured service program starting in 2021, which included a full pump cleaning and mechanical overhaul. By mid-2024, the pipeline was transporting 12,000 m³ of crude per day, with plans for further capacity increases and energy efficiency improvements. The case study emphasizes Sulzer's role in the successful reactivation and ongoing maintenance of the pipeline.
