This case study details the implementation of a self-service user portal by a university to enhance asset management and reduce configuration time for rack PDUs. The university, which operates over 100 racks across five sites, aimed to simplify the process for administrators to access detailed information about their assets. By leveraging Sunbird's APIs, the university developed a portal that allows administrators to view their physical and virtual hosts, manage contact details, and automate updates to their asset management system. The portal includes an intelligent rack PDU configurator, significantly reducing the configuration time from approximately 45 minutes to just two and a half minutes. Additionally, the integration with VMware and Hyper-V has streamlined virtual machine management, enabling automated updates and reducing manual effort. The overall result is a 94% reduction in time spent configuring rack PDUs and improved operational efficiency for administrators.
