This case study details the deployment of Supermicro servers powered by AMD EPYC 4000 Series CPUs by i3D.net, a provider specializing in online gaming hosting. The objective of this deployment was to address the high-performance requirements for online gaming servers, particularly for the launch of the game Dune: Awakening. The new servers have demonstrated a 52 percent increase in single-core performance and doubled the node density to 96 nodes per rack, all while adhering to a 9kW power budget. The case study outlines the challenges faced by i3D.net in delivering consistent performance without jitter, which is critical for a seamless gaming experience. It emphasizes the importance of single-core performance over core count, highlighting that each server's efficiency and stability are crucial for handling matchmaking and real-time gameplay updates effectively. The collaboration with Supermicro has also enabled a reduction in operational costs while enhancing the hosting capabilities for various game titles.
