Automated Cold Storage Facility Design Overview

This technical report details the design and operational features of Agile Cold Storage's new automated distribution center (DC) located near Atlanta, Georgia. The facility utilizes a high-bay, pallet automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) to enhance efficiency in pallet storage and fulfillment. The design emphasizes simplicity and redundancy to ensure reliability, with a focus on avoiding single points of failure. The system incorporates six Vectura stacker cranes, allowing for a maximum capacity of over 48,000 pallets. The report outlines the strategic placement of the facility to serve food processors and key consumer markets, as well as the integration of a custom-built warehouse management system (WMS) and Swisslog’s SynQ software for order management. Additionally, it discusses the energy-efficient construction methods and the importance of reliability in meeting customer demands. The findings from this facility are intended to serve as a blueprint for future automated DC projects.
