This technical report details the modernization of Union Investment's mainframe architecture, which was executed in collaboration with T-Systems. The project aimed to enhance performance, reduce latency, and improve service delivery by relocating the mainframe platform from Munich to Frankfurt and upgrading from IBM z14 to IBM z16. Key outcomes included a 25% increase in transaction speed, a 30-40% reduction in latency, and a 20% improvement in batch processing times. The report outlines the challenges faced, including the need to integrate mainframe systems with client/server systems and the geographical distance impacting user experience. The modernization process involved migrating 80 TB of data and implementing sysplex technology to minimize downtime, achieving a reduction of approximately 4,000 minutes per year. The successful transition not only met compliance requirements set by BaFin but also ensured that Union Investment could continue to provide efficient services to its customers and partners in the financial sector.
