This technical report introduces the Information Backbone for Robotic Construction (IBRC), a framework designed to unify fragmented planning and execution workflows in robotic construction. The IBRC aims to facilitate continuous coordination among various entities involved in construction, including robots, humans, and digital models. It addresses the challenges posed by the unstructured and dynamic nature of construction sites, which differ significantly from controlled environments like manufacturing. The framework structures product-process information through a staged refinement process from Building Information Modeling (BIM) to Fabrication Information Model (FIM) and Robot Execution Model (REM). The report details the implementation of the IBRC as a microservice architecture, enhancing modularity and flexibility. Additionally, it presents a prototype demonstrating the framework's feasibility by deriving robot-executable tasks from BIM and dispatching them to a robot simulation with real-time feedback. The document outlines key research questions related to the required system architecture and coordination mechanisms for effective robotic construction.
