This case study details the implementation of an RFID-enabled pharmacy inventory system at Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH), aimed at addressing inefficiencies in drug management. TCH, which spends over $400 million annually on medications, faced significant losses due to outdated manual inventory processes, resulting in approximately $40 million lost each year from expired and mismanaged drugs. The collaboration with Tecsys led to the development of a fully automated inventory system that integrates with existing healthcare platforms, enhancing visibility and control over drug inventory. The initiative not only reduced the manual tracking process from 12 steps to 2 but also achieved substantial annual savings, including $14 million on specific high-cost medications. The case study outlines the challenges faced prior to the implementation, the objectives set by pharmacy leaders, and the transformative outcomes of the new system, which has shifted pharmacy operations from a cost center to a strategic asset supporting patient care and financial stewardship.
