This case study details the implementation of a telehealth solution by UCHealth for emergency stroke care through a Mobile Stroke Treatment Unit (MSTU). The primary objective of this initiative is to reduce response times during stroke emergencies, which is critical for patient outcomes. UCHealth, a recognized healthcare network, launched the MSTU in January 2016, becoming one of the first in the United States. The MSTU is equipped with advanced technology, including a CT scanner and telehealth capabilities, allowing for immediate assessment and treatment of stroke patients at the scene. The study also discusses the collaboration with the 911 system and local fire districts to optimize emergency response. Furthermore, UCHealth is participating in the BEST-MSU clinical trial to evaluate the effectiveness of the MSTU compared to standard stroke management. The trial aims to demonstrate improved treatment times and outcomes, potentially justifying the broader adoption of mobile stroke units in emergency care.
